The kinara
A carved wooden kinara holds seven candles on a woven mat with corn and fruit, and a family gathers around the table as a child lights one of its candles.
Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of African American culture held from December 26 to January 1. Each night a candle is lit on the kinara, the seven-branched candle holder, for one of seven principles. These pages show the kinara on a woven mkeka mat, the carved unity cup, a basket overflowing with the harvest, ears of corn tied together and a table set with all the Kwanzaa symbols.
There are people celebrating too, from a family gathered as a child lights a kinara candle to children and adults dancing and playing djembe drums, plus gifts of books, a kente-style pattern, a Kwanzaa mandala, a kawaii kinara and a simple kinara with seven tall candles.
