Color choices
A hippo bathes in a river beside tall grasses. Color its rounded body a soft gray, with a paler pink tone around the ears and snout. Try cool blues for the rippling water surrounding it, and fresh greens for the cattails and grasses along the bank. Keep the ripples on the surface simple so the hippo stays the focus of the scene.
Compare water and grass
Color the water first, then use a darker palette for the tall grasses and reeds around the river.
